Hyaluronic acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humecant (moist-binding) molecule found in large concentrations in the extracellular matrix, the fluid-filled space between cells, and has proven to be an almost magical agent for skin vitality providing moisture, plumpness, firmness and suppleness to the skin. HA is a primary component of healthy skin, with about 50% of the HA contained in the skin matrix. Declining skin levels of HA are associated with dryness, reduced flexibility, and wrinkles. Additionally, HA is important to the neogenesis (regeneration) of collagen and elastin and therefore influences the density and flexibility of your skin. The more HA between the epidermal cells, the longer they stay healthy before they transform into dead skin cells. HA’s ability to bind 1000 times its weight in water ensures that your skin stays moist, soft and elastic. In simple terms, HA functions as “the soil in which skin cells grow.”

Sucrose octasulfate (SOS)

For many years, sucrose octasulfate has been the most commonly used anti-ulcer medication worldwide; acclaimed for its excellent healing and prophylactic effects on the lining of the stomach. SOS resembles heparin, which is also known as the body’s wound healing hormone, and the disaccharide structures in heparin and SOS are almost identical. It has been found that, just like heparin disaccharide, SOS activates bFGF (basic fibroblast growth factor) which is one of the most important modulating mechanisms for skin regeneration. Stimulating the growth factors in this way results in stronger, healthier skin and gave rise to the idea of utilising SOS’s healing and rejuvenating properties on skin too. In other words, SOS mimics the body’s natural signals for skin regeneration.

Lactic Acid (AHA)

Lactic acid may be better known as AHA, which is a general term for fruit acid and an efficient and very popular component of many skin care products. Fruit acids work primarily by degrading the little bridges (desmosomes) that bind skin cells together. Moreover AHA facilitates the peeling of the outermost dead skin cells so that new ones can take their place, and stimulates the vitality of your skin in a more general sense. You could say that it “airs out” the soil, thus leaving more space for the invigorating extracellular matrix structure.

Note: Despite the similarity in name, lactic acid is not chemically similar to lactose (milk sugar) and therefore need not be restricted by those with a milk allergy.

* Sunburn Alert: This product contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn. Use a sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards.
